Divinity of Maharaja Swathi Thirunal Ramavarma

 Today, Chitra month's Swati nakshatra.

Today's special is Narasimha Jayanti which should be celebrated according to Nakshatra.

Not only that!

Today is the birthday of Maharaja Swathi Thirunal, who ruled Thiruvananthapuram!

I have written extensively about Swati Thirunal Maharaja in my "Kerala Kathaigal"  series. 

Swati Thirunal Maharaja is mostly known as a musician and learned scholar. But not many knew the divinity within him.

Let's see only two of them today.

Once, a British government official came to Thiruvananthapuram and waited to meet Swati Thirunal Maharaja. His intention was to make some changes in the treaty, which included the King and the Travancore principality.

Swati Thirunal Raja was a very young boy at the time, and by signing this treaty, the king would lose many of his most important powers.

 Not only that, but they will have to pay a lot of money to the British government.

The English officer wondered what knowledge this little boy would have to understand all this. He was a king who could sing hymns. 

He thought that he could easily deceive him.

The king's instinct warned him that the officer had come with some vested interest. 

After praying to Padmanabha Swami and his favourite deity, Sri Narasimha, he left, saying, "I'll see him later."

Almost two weeks have passed. After a fortnight, he asked the English officer to be brought to his durbar.

The English officer was prepared to get the signature of this boy by stealth.

The Maharaja had a seat placed near him and made the officer sit there. 

The Maharaja spoke to him as if nothing had happened.

"What is the reason you came here?" he asked.

The English officer began to speak sweetly, thinking that his plan was going to work.

"You must accept and sign this new treaty," he said.

Meditating on his favourite deity, Narasimha, Swati Thirunal asked, "What?", looking at him intently.

Unable to bear the gaze of the king, the officer fainted there.

"None of our conspiracies will succeed until Swati Thirunal is the king of Travancore," the officer wrote to the British government.

Another incident occurred during the annual festival of the Sri Padmanabhaswamy temple.

After the Aaratu Utsavam at the beach, Padmanabhaswamy was returning to the temple surrounded by 8 decorated elephants. 

The king of Travancore, Padmanabha Dasa, used to walk with a drawn sword in front of the main elephant. King Swati Thirunal was leading the procession.

Then, unexpectedly, one of the elephants that came for the procession started running erratically. The elephant lost control and ran uncontrollably through the crowd. Instrumentalists, torchbearers, and civilians ran around in fear. 

But Swati Thirunal Maharaja, who was leading the procession in front of Padmanabha Swami, was standing like a statue in front of the elephant on which Padmanabha Swami was seated, holding his sword in his hand without moving even a single step. Narasimha Japa was running through his mind.

The mad elephant that was running around came running straight in front of Padmanabhaswami's elephant.

Maharaja was standing still, fixed his sharp gaze on the elephant, and peered through it.

Everything was happening in seconds. Government officials were dumbfounded. People were all panicked. The king did not even move his gaze.

Unexpectedly, the elephant came running, knelt before the king, and bowed down to the ground.

Swati Thirunal Maharaja, who had so much power, presented himself only as a devotee.

The power of Upasana is so secretive. To be protected! It will emerge when necessary.

ஸ்வாதி திருநாள் மஹாராஜாவின் உபாஸனை சிறப்பு

இன்று சித்திரை ஸ்வாதி நட்சத்திரப்படி கொண்டாட வேண்டிய நரசிம்ம ஜெயந்தி என்பது இன்றைய சிறப்பு. அது மட்டுமல்ல! திருவனந்தபுரத்தை ஆண்ட மஹாராஜா ஸ்வாதி திருநாள் பிறந்த தினம் இன்று ! ஸ்வாதி திருநாள் மகாராஜா குறித்து எனது கேரள கதைகள் தொடரில் விரிவாக எழுதியிருந்தேன்.

ஸ்வாதித் திருநாள் மகாராஜா ஒரு இசை வல்லுநராகவும் கற்றறிந்த அறிஞராக பெரும்பாலும் அறியப்படுகிறார். ஆனால் அவருக்குள் இருந்த தெய்வீகத்தன்மையை பலரும் அறியவில்லை..

 
அவற்றுள் இரண்டு சம்பவத்தை மட்டும் இன்று பார்ப்போம்.-வி.அரவிந்த் ஸுப்ரமண்யம்!

 
ஒருமுறை ஆங்கிலேய அரசு அதிகாரி ஒருவர் திருவனந்தபுரம் வந்து ஸ்வாதித் திருநாள் மகாராஜா சந்திப்பதற்காக காத்திருந்தார். மன்னருக்கும் திருவிதாங்கூர் சமஸ்தானத்துக்கு உட்பட்ட உடன்படிக்கையில் சில மாறுதல்களை செய்ய வேண்டும் என்பது அவரது எண்ணம்.

ஸ்வாதித் திருநாள் ராஜா அப்போது மிகவும் சின்னஞ் சிறுவனாக இருந்தார் இந்த உடன்படிக்கை கையெழுத்திடுவதால் அரசர் தனது மிக முக்கியமான பல அதிகாரங்களை இழந்துவிடுவார். அது மட்டுமில்லாமல் ஆங்கில அரசுக்கு அதிகம் கப்பம் கட்ட வேண்டி இருக்கும். 

இதையெல்லாம் புரிந்து கொள்ளும் அளவுக்கு இந்த சின்னஞ்சிறுவனுக்கு என்ன அறிவு இருக்கப்போகிறது என்று அந்த ஆங்கிலேய அதிகாரி எண்ணினார். சங்கீதம் பாட்டு என்று இருக்கக்கூடிய ஒரு மன்னர் இவர். இவரை எளிதில் நாம் ஏமாற்றி விடலாம் என்று எண்ணினார்.

 

ஏதோ ப்ரச்சனையைக் கொண்டுதான் இவன் வந்திருக்கிறான் என்று மன்னர் ஊகித்தார். பத்மநாப ஸ்வாமியிடமும், தன் இஷ்ட தெய்வமான நரசிம்மரிடமும் ப்ரார்த்தனை செய்து விட்டு, “அவரை பின்னர் சந்திப்போம்” என்று பொதுவாக சொல்லி விட்டார்.

 
கிட்டத்தட்ட இரண்டு வார காலம் கடந்து விட்டது. பதினைந்து நாட்கள் ஆன பிறகு ஆங்கில அதிகாரியை தன் தர்பாருக்கு அழைத்து வரச்சொன்னார்.

 
இன்று எப்படியும் நயவஞ்சகமாக இந்தச் சிறுவனிடம் கையெழுத்து பெற்று விட வேண்டும் என்ற எண்ணத்தில் தயாரானார் ஆங்கில அதிகாரி.

 
தனக்கு அருகில் ஒரு ஆசனத்தை போடச் செய்து அங்கே அவரை அமரச் செய்தார். எதுவுமே நடக்காதது போல் அவர்களிடத்தில் குசலம் விசாரித்துவிட்டு,
“நீங்கள் இங்கு வந்தததற்கான காரணம் என்ன ?” என்று கேட்டார்.

 
ஆங்கில அதிகாரியும் தன்னுடைய திட்டம் பலிக்க போவதை எண்ணி மெதுவாக சொல்ல துவங்கினார்.

 
“நீங்கள் இந்த புதிய உடன்படிக்கையை ஏற்றுக் கொண்டு கையொப்பம் இட வேண்டும்” என்றார்.

 
தன் இஷ்ட தெய்வமான நரசிம்மரை மனதில் த்யானித்து, “என்ன ?” என்பது போல் மன்னர் அவரை ஊடுருவிப் பார்த்தார்.

 
மன்னரின் பார்வையின் வீச்சை தாங்க முடியாத அதிகாரி அங்கேயே மயங்கி விழுந்து விட்டார்.

 
”ஸ்வாதித் திருநாள் திருவிதாங்கூர் சமஸ்தான மன்னராக இருக்கும் வரை நம்முடைய சதித்திட்டங்கள் எதுவும் ஈடேறாது” என்று அந்த அதிகாரி ஆங்கில அரசாங்கத்துக்கு கடிதம் எழுதிவிட்டார்.

 

மற்றொருமுறை பத்மநாபஸ்வாமி கோவிலில் வருடாந்திர உற்சவம் நடந்து கொண்டிருந்தது.

 
கடற்கடற்கரையில் ஆராட்டு உற்சவம் நடைபெற்ற பிறகு, 8 அலங்கரிக்கப்பட்ட யானைகள் சூழ பத்மநாபஸ்வாமி திரும்பி வந்து கொண்டிருந்தார். 

பத்மநாப தாஸரான திருவிதாங்கூர் மன்னர் யானைக்கு முன் உருவிய வாளுடன் நடந்து வருவது வழக்கம். மன்னரான ஸ்வாதித் திருநாள் அப்படி வந்து கொண்டிருந்தார். அப்போது யாரும் எதிர்பாராத விதமாக ஊர்வலத்தில் வந்த ஒரு யானைக்கு மதம் பிடித்து அது தாறுமாறாக ஓட ஆரம்பித்தது. மதம் பிடித்த யானை கட்டுக்கடங்காமல் கூட்டத்தின் நடுவே பாய்ந்தது.

 வாத்தியக்காரர்களும் தீவட்டி பிடித்தவர்களும் பொதுமக்களும் பயந்து அங்குமிங்குமாக ஓடினார்கள். ஆனால் பத்மநாப ஸ்வாமிக்கு முன்பாக ஊர்வலத்தை முன்னெடுத்துக் கொண்டிருந்த ஸ்வாதித் திருநாள் மகாராஜா கையில் பிடித்த வாளைப் பிடித்தபடி தான் இருந்த இடத்தை விட்டு ஒரு அடி அடி கூட நகராமல் பத்மநாப ஸ்வாமி அமர்ந்திருக்கக் கூடிய யானையின் முன்பு சிலை போல நின்று கொண்டிருந்தார். 

மனதுக்குள் நரசிம்ம ஜபம் ஓடிக்கொண்டிருந்தது.

 
அங்குமிங்கும் ஓடிய மதம் பிடித்த யானை, நேராக பத்மநாபஸ்வாமியின் யானையின் முன்பு பாய்ந்து வந்தது. இறைவனுக்கு முன்பாக நின்று கொண்டிருந்த மகாராஜாவும் நின்ற இடத்திலேயே நின்றபடி, தன்னுடைய கூர்மையான பார்வையை யானையை நோக்கி செலுத்தி, அதனை ஊடுருவிப் பார்த்தார்.

 
எல்லாம் நொடிகளில் நடந்து கொண்டிருந்தது. 

அரசாங்க அதிகாரிகள் செய்வதறியாது திகைத்தார்கள். மக்கள் எல்லோரும் பதறிப்போனார்கள். மன்னரோ தன் பார்வையைக் கூட நகர்த்தவில்லை.
யாரும் எதிர்பாக்காத விதத்தில், பாய்ந்து ஓடோடி வந்த யானை, மன்னர் முன்பாக மண்டியிட்டு தன் துதிக்கை பூமியில் பட விழுந்து வணங்கியது.

 
இவ்வளவு சக்தி கொண்ட ஸ்வாதி திருநாள் மஹாராஜா தன்னை பக்திமானாக மட்டுமே வெளியே காட்டிக் கொண்டார்.

 
உபாசனா பலம் என்பது அவ்வளவு ரகசியமாக வெளியே தெரியாமல் இருக்கக்கூடியது. காக்கப்பட வேண்டியது! தேவையான சந்தர்ப்பத்தில் தானே அது வெளிப்படும்.
