The Plan of Sastha

We made a trip to Sabarimalai yesterday combining various reasons... Right from my morning puja I was a very satisfactory that things would go smooth. The grace of all my Gurus and my great grand father will surely help me reach my goals.

Kuthiraan - our favorite spot of the Lord - standing in front of His very Sannidhi gave us an assurance... To be frank - though I felt very happy  and assured there, I never expected such a favorable turn of events from all quarters.

Throughout the yatra the positive charge was with us... At Pampa during my japam, the main purpose of my visit was accomplished and it was clearly and  physically acknowledged by the Lord.

The spark gave me the happiness of a lifetime, not because I have achieved something great but to remind me to be more grateful to the ever compassionate God.

The darshanam of our beloved Manikanta was a magical moment(as usual...!!!). and on the whole all the events took a miraculous turn and we were blessed with much more than what we planned and what we expected.

After a wonderful trip to Sabarimalai we came back yesterday night...  and today morning I wanted to refer a text regarding Dakshina Kaali.... So I went to my library and took the book.  The book was "Dashamaha Vidya" - which completely deals on mantras of the Ten Forms of Devi... and no way related to Sastha....

But when I opened the book, I found the place where it was written :
"சாஸ்தாவின் திட்டம் பலித்தது" "Sasthaavin Thittam Balithathu"

The Plan of Sastha - prevailed

My Bhaktaparipala have planned every action that happens next and every molecule in check and under control.
Fortunate to be a slave to the ever compassionate master !!!

Moolamantra Varnathmika Sasthru Stuti

This Moolamantra Varnathmika Sasthru Stuti is from Bhoothanathopakhyanam.. This was chanted by the Devas in praise to the Master of the Universe who is seated in Ponnambalamedu...

The speciality of this stuti is - it is constructed in the form of Sasthru Moolamantram

The Sasthru moolamantram evokes the Lord, asking protection and freedom from all sorrow and suffering. All auspiciousness and serenity is attained by this magnificent Moolamantra.

But chanting of moolamantram needs mantra upadesham. So instead, this Moolamantra Varnathmika Sasthru Stuti can be chanted - which carries the same potential of the moolamantram.

It is a prayer that adores the great creator and liberator, who out of love and compassion manifests, to protect us.

Regular chanting of Moolamantra Varnathmika Sasthru Stuti brings amazing benefits. The experience of people who have done this is testimony to the power of the Stuti

Shabarimala Yatra Vidhanam - Dos and Donts

Every year there will be a 2 Final questions before concluding the Shabarimala Devaprashnam...

" ee kollam ethara janangal vannu?" "How many people have come this year? "
with the number of devotees and visitors increasing every day, this question may get an answer around some lakhs or even crore in near future

The Ultimate final question  -
"ethara bhakthanmaar vannu?" "How many devotees have come ?"
the highest number reached so far in 7  - Yes !!! Just "Seven"

Ofcourse we can very well take a credit and say Iam one among the seven.... But our inner self  knows very well where we stand. The Shabarimala has already become a picnic spot and Vrutham has become a fashion. Mandala Kaalam is fast approaching and I have a long pending request about listing the actual rules of Shabarimala Yatra and Vrutham. First let me make it clear that Iam not a "big brother" to advise anyone...  All I wanted to insist is - atleast let us make a sincere attempt to become one of His true devotees. He will take care of the rest.

There is yet another Golden Rule "Guru Vaakyam Pramaanam" - Guru's words are Final. But since there are certain common rules which are to be followed I am presenting these here so that it will be helpful for devotees who are really sincere in following the Vrutham and practices strictly.

(Swamis who wear maala and then smoke, drink and do all prohibited things - you are no way connected here. You too will definitely get darshan. But remember - You are not cheating your Friends & relatives; Ofcourse You CANNOT cheat Ayyappan; You are Cheating yourself)

All that I've learnt from my Grandfather, Guru and many other senior Guruswamys like Kambankudi Mama, Iam presenting the rules of Shabarimala Yatra. Iam not coming to the area "whether is it applicable in todays context?" etc etc.. These are the practices prescribed and Iam 200 % sure that It can be practised provided you dont go for a compromise. And still we have strict disciplinarians who follow it.

Maala Dharanam (Wearing the Mala)
Maala Dharanam is done generally on Kaarthigai 1st or any other auspicious day according to the date of the Yatra ie 41 days before the date of Darshanam. Maala Dharanam is generally done at ones home, Guruswamy's home, during a puja or at a common place of worship like temple

Maala Dharanam has to be done only after the permission of ones parents and wife(if married). Without their permission the whole yatra is futile.

And No spiritual practice is successful without the blessings of a Guru. Especially the whole concept of Shabarimala Yatra revolves round the phenomenon called "Guru". So after the blessings of Guru one has to wear the Mala through "His Own" Guruswamy. (iam stressing from "his Own Guruswamy" - because Iam seeing many "Seasonal" Guruswamis whose only job is to - stand in front of any Ayyappan Kovil; give a loud "Swamiye Sharanam Ayyappa"; put the mala in the persons neck and collect Dakshina without forgetting)

The Guruswamy who is going to take you to the Yatra is the only person who is authorized. An alternate practice is wearing the maala from one's mother's hand in the presence of Guruswamy. (some of us follow the  practical of doing the avahanam of Ayyappan in the maala - Iam not entering that area now)

For a married woman - the only person authorized to give the Maala is her Husband an no one else(Not even the seniormost Guruswamy). Only in the case when the husband is not alive, the lady can approach any other elders to wear the maala.

Vrutham
Vrutham means being nearer to God. All your activities should be Ayyappan Centric during the Vrutha Kaalam.

The number of days for a complete Mandala Vrutham is 41 days and anything below that is only secondary. Throughout the Vrutha Kaalam, Contemplating on Lord Ayyappa should be the only focus of a devotee.

Taking bath twice a day, doing atleast a simple puja and calling out Sharanams is his daily duty.

Eat to Live and do not live to eat - Food must me minimum and that too for the sake of health and not for variety and taste. The food taken should be Sathwick - that do not harm the body and the mind. Not only non vegetarian is prohibited, Rajasic Food which are more spicy  and Thamasic food like Garlik, Onion etc are also prohibited. And ofcourse eating any outside food other than puja is strictly prohibited (This includes hotel and even marriages) A person in vrutham is not advised to attend domestic functions like marriages. He is prohibited from attending any funeral or similar rituals.

Donot enjoy any luxuries to the body - all the practices of Not Shaving, Not Sleeping in the bed, Not wearing footwear is to stress this point.

Maintain Celibacy with its pristine purity not only physically but also mentally - this is the reason one is advised no to show interest with Cinema, Drama (and Now Television also). Even his own wife is Maaligaipuram after he wears the Maala.

Those who have the upanayanam must strictly follow the Sandhya Vandanam and Gayatri Japam. Without this the total vrutham is a waste.

Annadhanam and Puja
Annadhanam is one of the primary duty of Ayyappa Bhakta. This was insisted because one must see Ayyappa in every living being. But unfortunately it has become a ritual.

Many Guruswamis demand the disciples to compulsorily conduct a puja in their house and feed all from their group. There is nothing wrong in the practice if person can accord it. By feeding His devotees The Lord will definitely be happy.

But for those who cannot afford - feed any single deserving poor person with whatever possible food. The Lord will be pleased with this act.

One need not expect any invitation for any Ayyappan puja and can very well attend any puja and help for the puja to the maximum extend possible.

Calling everyone as "Ayyappa" or "Swami" should come from heart and not as a mere ritualistic word. Callout the Sharanams only during appropriate occasions and Sharana Gosham should not disturb any Puja activity.

Guruswamy and Gurudakshina

The whole concept of Sabarimala revolves round Guru - without him no yatra gets fulfilled. Guru is like your father or mother. You cannot change your Guru as per your convenience. I still know devotees who go to Sabari yatra along with their Guruswamys for more than 35 years. ( And there are also people who become Guruswamys directly in the second year !!! )

Here talking about the qualifications of a Guruswamy - He takes you to the Lord; He is leading you towards the divinity.

So in order to show your graditude towards him we need to pay Guru Dakshina to the Swami and do namaskaram to him. Its practice that a sishya has to pay respects to his Guruswamy and pay him Guru dakshina 8 times during the sabarimala yatra.

1. The first time when the Guru formally accepts him for the sabarimala yatra
2. While wearing the Maala
3. While taking the irumudi - Kettu Nerai
4. At Erumeli after the darshanam while starting the yatra
5. At Azhudha river
6. At Pampa after the snanam and while starting
7. At sannidhanam after the abhishekam
8. While removing the maala

It is the duty of every Ayyappa bhaktha to follow all these rules strictly and earn the grace of Guruswamy and thereby get the blessings of Guruswamy's Guruswamy(Lord Ayyappa)

Kettu Nerai
Kettunerai is a unique process of sabarimala yatra. One has to be very careful and devoted in this aspect. Only person with whom you have Karmic Relations can fill the rice in the Kettu Nerai. The Nei should be filled only by the devotees and no one else. All the results of your Vrutham is instilled in the Coconut and the Ghee you are carrying. So please be strict when others come forward to fill the Ghee or Rice.

Ive already written in detail about this

And irumudi is the very form of Ayyappan. So please give utmost respect to irumudi. Iam not elaborating on this because at times its heartbreaking to see people even urinating having irumudi in their head.

Padhinettam Padi
The eighteen steps are eighteen divine forces guarding the Sabarimala Zone. By climing these steps you are actually stepping into the zone of the deity. So only your Vrutham gives you the Strength to cross over the Holy Eighteen Steps. All others without Vrutha Balam earns the wrath of these devatas.

And One has to climb the 18 steps only once during one sabarimala yatra. Once you climb the steps with the Irumudi and see Lord Sastha - you have reached the destination; your goal is accomplished. Even the Nei Abhishekam is only the next task.

Removing the Maala
The Sabarimala Vrutham ends only when you reach back home keep the prasadams at your house show a Karpoora Harathi and then take the prasadams. Only after this one has to remove the maala. (not at Sabari peetam or Pamba - Just like that removing the maala and immediately going elsewhere)

Swami is always with us -  ready to give us whatever we want.  Following the Vrutham with utmost sincerity will definitely fetch something more than what we want  -the result will be Ayyappan himself.

Two more requests
And along with all these, though not in the Vrutham rules, also make a strong Sankalpam regarding 2 aspects:
1. The thousands of devotees who come to sannidanam are also the very form of Sastha. We dont know the quantum of devotion of any Bhakta and who is dear to Swamy.. So please donot cause any disturbance or uncomfortable feeling to any devotee...

2. Make sure that the greenery of Sabarimala is not disturbed by us. Do not throw any plastics or any other garbage at sabarimala zone. Do we spit inside our house? But we do everything in Sabarimala. Its the abode of the Lord and to keep it clean is the first service to the Lord than anything else.

Devatas of the Ponnu Pathinettam Padi

Many of our friends especially Mumbai Kamesh was keep on requesting me regarding the Devatas of the Ponnu Pathinettam Padi - the holy 18 steps of Sabarimala

I have already written an article regarding the Pathinettam Padi

18 steps Pathinettam Padi

Padi puja is a unique ritual at Sabarimala where the Tantri performs the ritualistic puja to all the eighteen steps individually.

Actually the padi puja is not the puja to the physical 18 steps but the puja is for the 18 deities who preside over each of the eighteen steps.

The devatas of 18m padi are very secretly maintained and not revealed to anyone. But every year during mandala season, news papers like Maalai Malar start a comedy show by putting the list of devatas of 18 padi (of their own) like Rahu, Ketu, Ranganathan (?? !!) etc.. We can view this entertainment show every year.

Since the list was a secret I was very reluctant in sharing it with anyone... Then I remembered an incident from my own life where a Deva Rahasya was once revealed to me by a Siddha Purusha and when I asked whether I can share this, he very gladly accepted saying it must reach the Bhakta Lokam.!

So I decided to apply the same rule here and with a conviction that, even if one true devotee is happy reading my Bhakta Paripala's glory, Iam sure my Guru who revealed this secret, will forgive me for mentioning it.

Each step has a presiding deity. Each of this devata has a separate dhyana swaroopa, moola mantram and puja method. The details of the Dhyana and the Sankalpa of the 18 deities are below:

(Iam not giving the dhyana sloka and moola mantra here... Certain things Ive made only a hint... So read between the lines to have a better understanding)

On the whole we consider Satya Dharma on either side of the 18 stepms and mentally offer salutations to them using their moola mantra for the 18 steps

Step 1 Naga Yakshi
Nagayakshi is one of the paripara devatas of Sastha and she is stationed at many of his temples like Kulathupuzhai, Achan kovil etc

Pathaam Thruppadiye Sharanam Ayyappa

Pathinancham Thruppadiye Sharanam Ayyappa

Step 16 Aghora
The following there are Astra Devatas. Ever ready for prayoga against the evil. Agora is one of the Astra of Shiva which he created to destroy the Tripurasuras. It can grants worldly good and salvation to the soul.
Pathinaram Thruppadiye Sharanam Ayyappa

Step 17 Pashupatha
Pashupata is Shiva's personal asta and a most forceful one. It can even be discharged by eyes, words or mind. Its capable of destroying anything and can even stop creation.
Pathinezham Thruppadiye Sharanam Ayyappa

Step 18 Mrutyunjaya
Mrutyunjaya is yet another Astra which gives eternal state to the aspirant. This is not just to live a healthy life and get rid of ailments. This conquers mrutyu - the permanent state of existence; Thats knowing the self; being self; Thats Thathwamasi.
Pathinettam Thruppadiye Sharanam Ayyappa

And IMHO Padipuja is again unique to Sabarimala and I dont know how far its right to repeat it at other places. This is because - the 18 steps are installed at Sabarimala as a Prathishta by Deva Sankalpam. We dont know exactly on what sankalpam these steps were installed and hence you cant repeat it elsewhere. (and Since the 18 steps are guarded by these devatas you need proper Vrutham to qualify yourself to please the devatas of each step and step your foot on the padhinettam padi)

At all other places the 18 steps are built (and not installed as a prathishta) and so the question of doing padipuja does not arise. (Today we see padipuja at many places - especially at Andhra and I saw a padi puja done for temporary 18 steps built with bamboo sticks !!! )

18 steps Pathinettam Padi

Swamy Sharanam Anna
What is the actual meaning of 18 steps which is there in sanidhanam. becasue i have heared lot of menaing for the same viz 18 puranas. 18 gunas, 18 mountains around sabarimala, etc... I want to know what is actual meaning of the same and after claiming we attain the Lord which is called "THAATVAMAASI" you hav written the meaning of the same in ur book but since i dont knw to read i did not knw the actual meaing.
Awaiting to your reply
Swamy Sharanam
Santosh
------------------------------------------
18 Steps.... are equated to

18 Puranas
18 Mountains
18 Ayudhams
18 Siddhas
18 Devatas
18 Gunas

There are various explanations suiting each of the above statement.

You can also find ample of proof justifying each stand ...

"Padi Pathinettum Puranangal Aakkiya Premaswaroopandae Ananda Mandapam..." says an old sharana vili

There are 18 mountains surrounding Sabarimalai and each one is represented through one step of the padhinettu padi...

Ayyappan has 18 Ayudhams... he left each one of the ayudham while ascending the peetam and hence each step has or represents an aydham of Ayyappan. - Weapons which kills (the enemies) and at the same time protect (the devotees)

All our Shastras greatly exclaim about the 18 siddha purushas... These siddha purushas have surrendered to Lord Sastha who is the Yogeeshwara and obtained the status or privilege of being his Ashtadasha Peetam(18 Steps)

18 Special Devatas are installed in the 18 steps.. During the customary Padi Pooja - these dieties are worshipped...

Confused ...?

All these are implications.... Everything is true as far as this is concerned... you cant deny of the above statement... "It is there - because it is there" - is the best answer

As per the divine will of Lord Ayyappa all these things happen...

Now just go in the reverse order...

There are eighteen devatas who are the adhishtana moorthis of 18 mountain ranges(or Parivara devats) who are installed in the 18 steps... and Sastha was seated above all (here the steps are not built.. but it is done as a pratishta... that is the most important thing and uniqueness of Sabarimalai... )

When Ayyappa avatara took place he renounced his prince hood and left his ayudhams one by one on each of the step of Pathinettampadi... and merged with Sastha

Further 18 siddha purushas who wanted to serve the Lord, installed their divine presence in the 18 steps to serve him as well as bless the devotees..

Just imagine, the Swami is same everywhere.. at Achankovil, Aryankavu or Kulathupuzhai, Coimbatore or Banglore... But the 18 steps are unique here... You can see the Lord even without the vrutham. But you cannot step the Padinettampadi without Vrutham... Thats its speciality..

Bcoz.. By climbing the steps - You are actually stepping the zone of a Particular devata who guards it... and only if you have the Vrutha Balam - you qualify - "you pass the exam" - you are blessed.

(These devatas are worshipped during the Padi Pooja - this detail is not known or not revealed to many.. I can humbly claim that Iam blessed to have the actual process and the actual list of devatas of all the 18 steps along with their dhyanam - moola mantram and everything)

Now you can see - Every statement given above is true...

And thats not the end...

Every divine aspect has a direct side and an esoteric meaning... For Example Rama's war with with Ravana to unite with Seetha - is not a mere story but the aikyam of Jeevathma and Paramatma

Similarly the 18 steps has an esoteric meaning -
that one who conquers the 18 Gunas becomes Bhagawan... thats THATHVAMASI

Each year you follow the Vrutham to 100% sincerity, you climb one step or rise one level in your spiritual progress... the inner refinement happens.. (that is the actual purpose of Sabarimalai yatra.. if this is not happening.. there is no use even if you go 1008 times)

Similarly when you overcome the 18 gunas... you become pure and attain the state of oneness with the Lord - the state is called THATHVAMASI.

THATHVAMASI is a Maha Vakyam from the Vedas meaning - "You know that you and that are One"..

Unfortunately, we have neither understood the direct meaning nor the esoteric meaning

Let that evercompassionate Lord bless us with the Gnana and Bhakti and the inner drive to understand His significance...

Meaning of Harivarasanam

After the posting of Lokaveeram.... Many of our devotees are mailing me to post the meaning of Harivarasanam too... I had been to Chennai for a "Hariharaputra Sapthaham" at the wonderful Perambur Ayyappan Temple and so could not do it immediately...

With a very great mental solitude and vibration I gained from Perambur Ayyappan.. Iam presenting the Harivarsanam here..

------------------
Let me give a small introduction about Harivarasanam before we get in to the meaning...

Many people are under the impression that “Harivarasanam" was written by Jesudas.... This wonderful work was composed by Shri. Kulathur Iyer(who lived at Chennai belonging to the illustrious Kambankudi family..) If I remember right, He published it in a book called
"Darma Sastha Stuti Kadambam" (A garland of praises to Lord Darma Sastha)

It is again a myth that this "Ashtakam" is song to make the Lord sleep.... How can you make the Master of the universe sleep? The ashtakam says "devam-ashraye.." - I take refugee in you.. I surrender to you... How can you surrender to a sleeping person?

And the "Sharanam Ayyappaa Swami Sharanam Ayyappa" doesn't appear in the earlier texts and might have been a later addition... [dear devotees... it is not Sararanam Ayyappa... or Charanam Ayyappa... its Sharanam Ayyappa]

Now the audio recording at Sabarimalai has "Panchadreeshwara Mangalam...." added after Harivarasanam - which is again from the work of Shri. Kambankudi Kulathu Iyer (Last Sloka of Sasthru Shatakam - 100 verses on Lord Sastha)
In the early 1950s the area was just a wild jungle - with only a handful of devotees visited. One devotee, a Menon, stayed there at Sannidhanam and he was very fond
of this Ashtakam and used to recite it at the Sannidhanam. Some years later, due to administrative reasons he was moved out and he died as an orphan. Thirumeni Eashwaran Nampoothiri, an old Mel Santhi of the temple remembered his friend and started reciting Harivarasanam while closing the doors... Thus started a tradition that continues to this day.
