Guru - Mantra Upadesham

After the reply to Mr.X regarding mantra upadesham.. Iam receiving many mails and messages personally from people expressing their doubt regarding this "Mantra Upadesham" and Upasana...

1. How to Get Mantra Upadesham
2. How to approach Guru for Upadesham
-----
Let me throw some light in this Area...
But before that read my following articles (Read in Once again... EVEN IF YOU HAVE ALREADY READ IT)

Guru - Sishya Relationship

Guru - Sishya Relationship Part 2

Mantra Upadesham goes two way - The first one is for exceptional cases where a Mahan or Guru takes Karuunya towards a Sishya and gives him mantra upadesham even without asking. - please note this happens only for exceptional cases due to the accumulated merits of upasana of Purva Janma and this cannot be examples.

The next way  -
a Sishya has devotion towards a particular God and he identifies himself with a particular person as his Guru. First he must openly declare his surrender to his Guru.

He has to literally plead to the Guru for getting a mantra upadesham. It is said that even the Guru has to wait until the sishya asks or rather beg for the upadesham at least three times. Once the Guru is satisfied that the Sishya is a "Sat Patram" he can consider him. (please note : Only Consider).

Because the guru gives mantra to a disciple and because she or he embodies the spirit and life of that mantra. According to the Kularnava Tantra, there is no difference between devata, mantra and guru. "Devata in truth is the same as mantra; mantra in truth is the same as the guru. The fruit of the worship of the devata, mantra and guru is the same."

Moola Mantram is actually going to take you to the divinity. When one is not ready to shed his Ego even for the sake of Mantra upadesham to his Guru, then how can one attain salvation?

I have personally seen both extreme cases of  "so called Sishya" either demanding mantra upadesham from the Guru or his ego preventing in surrendering to the Guru for asking Mantra upadesham.

(Here again the Age, Qualification or Status of a Guru is not a criteria. I wish to quote a real life experiece known to me personally. A 58 year old sishya was a very great devotee and wanted mantra upadesham. He developed a Guru Bhava towards 18 year old person. The young Guru in turn took the person to many other Upasakas including his own Guru.

But the Sishya was very clear... "All these Upasakas are great undoubtedly... But you are my Guru... and I shall wait till u give me upadesham". He literally waited for about a decade to get his first mantram from his Guru.

This is true Guru Bhakthi !!! )

So I come back to square one - Ultimate surrender to Guru is the best way to get mantra upadesham.

Tatviddhi Pranipatena Pariprashnena Sevaya
Upadekshyanti Te Jnanam Jnanina Stattwadarshinah
Understand the true nature of knowledge by approaching a Guru. If you prostrate at their feet, serve them and question them with an open & guileless heart, those wise person will give you the upadesham of the divine. - says Krishna in Geetha.

However great a person may be, his close associates cannot understand his greatness, often they take him to be as ordinary human being like them. This is the effect of Maya.

A sishya must not get into this trap.

One has to really feel blessed for getting each oppurtunity to serve Guru, salute Guru, Pray to guru, doing namaskarams to Guru. "Whenever/wherever you see your  Guru do namaskaram - says Kularnava Tantram.

Even if you think over the feet of Guru (Guru Paduka) it gives  the result greter than puja or Khetra Darshanam. So if you can see him in person - never miss the oppurtunity to do Namaskaram to him.

Once you see you guru, even if it is a crowded hall or road - fall like a danda(stick) and do sashtanga namaskara.

I have seen many such sishyas doing namaskarams without even a trace of ego.

From my personal experience I can say - this act instantaneously kindles the Karunya of Guru towards the Sishya.

(Beleive me - the same person mentioned above is around 70 years now. He will still, at once , fall down at the feet of his much Younger Guru - wherever he sees him)

My association with many illustrious Gurus have taught me this basic lesson called Guru Bhakthi. So Iam really surprised or rather shocked to see the deteriorating form of Guru Bhakthi...

Many people approach me me for instruction, clarification and initiation. Most of them are sincere who are highly devoted. They need mantras to get their problems solved, achieve something or gain some material or rarely some spiritual benefit. Many other are interested in gaining powers and benefits in the society we live in today.

Only a handful of few are really having the mix of bhakti, inner drive and wisdom. I still find myself searching for a person "who crave to reach the Lord" and seek mantra upadesham for that purpose.

I pray to the divine lotus feet of Lord Bhaktaparipala who is the Lord, the mantra, the Guru, the Sishya, the question, the answer and everything.

Mantra Upadesham

Query :
Dear Aravind Guruji,  iam reading all your writings regularly and i have developed a guru bhava towards you... I consider you as my manasika guru and now i have a crisis from which only you can help me.

Can I get the mantra of Kirata Varahi? Can u give me the upadesham of this mantra?

You are the only person who can help... my astrologer has analysed my horoscope and said its full of problems and adviced me to do this upasana

.....................

It is actually very ridiculous and funny to hear that an astrologer recommends the "Upasana" of Varahi, that too specifically Kirata Varahi for a problem with one's horoscope. A mantra sadhana is not that easy as you think. You can directly ask me that you are in need of this mantra if you are interested -  I shall say yes or no.

Or If you are really telling the truth then take your horoscope to another proper astrologer who will guide you properly.

Please let me make clear.... Iam receiving many mails like this claiming that Iam their manaseeka Guru etc etc.... A Sishya is a person who must have one to one relationship with his Guru. And one must follow the words of his Guru without a second thought... Only if a person has this maturity he is fit to called to be sishya.

If one can follow 100% what the Guru says then this Maanasika Guru may work out.. But people leave out most of the advises and conveniently choose "selected areas" and claim to be Maanasika sishyas.

And I personally dont accept the concept of Maanasika guru or Manasika Sishya unless a sishya 200% follows his guru. Unless a Guru knows his sishya well, how can he guide him? Ofcourse there may be exceptional cases... But that doesn't happen always.

Similarly for a Guru - A person who cares for his sishya's upliftment without even a trace of selflessness is a Guru.

Today in both sides we have corrupt people....
Today there are sishyas who pressurize and demand upadesham from Guru.. "if are hesitating to give me this mantra upadesham I shall goto some other Guru." or they  make payments in the name of dakshina and get the mantra.

And on the other hand - there are Gurus who are having an inner fear that they may lose their sishya and so venture into dramatic actions.
A very popular person - may be known to most of Ayyappa devotees - claiming himself to be a Gurunathar - he gave a particular mantram as "Mantra Upadesham" to few persons.  The best part is this person has not even got any single mantra upadesham in his life time. A person who gives upadesha without the mantra adhikara is sure to face disasters.

And some more cases - Mantra upadesham thru Phone, thru email - what is all this ?

Many may accuse me of being partial and threatening. But what Iam speaking is truth and only truth. From many real life anecdotes ive seen - my sincere advise is to stay away from such uncalled practices.

When you have Guru Bhava towards a particular person - first shed your ego and hesitation with him. Approach your Guru directly  with utmost humbleness and surrender to him completely. Only then you are eligible for mantra upadesham.

A mantram  is a subtle form of the Lord himself... and the potentiality of mantram varies from person to person. So only a Guru can select a mantra that suits the capacity of the sishya to proceed in his sadhana. By this the Guru purifies the sishya's mind and pray to Lord to obtain the divine grace for the upliftment of the sishya  Not only this - the guru actually is now shouldering the karmic burden of the disciple ... Now it is also the Guru's responsible to take his sishya for salvation. So he takes up the sishya's Karmic burden and prays for its dissolution.

Please understand.. Until the Sishya gets the Gnana(wisdom) the Guru will not attain Moksha. Guru is such an embodiment of compassion. So, direct grace of Guru is vital in any mantra upadesham.

And so, mantra upadesham other than procedural krama order is not going to give any result.

The following article written by me for the souvenir of Sri Kodhanda Ramaswamy Temple on the Occasion of the 75th year Celebration - revealing various aspects of Lord Rama - from the view of Mantra Shastra than - bhakti marga alone.

Lalita Trishati Parayanam - Query continues....

After answering the query on Lalita Trishati, some of our devotees wanted to list out similar stotras which r not to be chanted without upadesham...

Vishnu Sahasranamam and Genaral Stotras like Loka Veeram, Shyamala Dhaandakam etc can be chanted irrespective of any criteria...

But how is it possible to list out the Stotras ? Stotra Collection s is like a huge ocean. It is impossible to list all the Stotras which need initiation.

A simple way to find it out is that all the Stotras which needs upadesham Starts with
"Asya Shree................mantrasya...... rishi etc.
(Remember ? there is one mantram called Gayatri which you got as upadesham from your father. Before chanting this mantram you used to do nyasas)
and having beeja mantrams (ie like Hreem Aim etc)

All other slokas donot have any bar and anyone can chant it.

And  the following popular Stotras which are now chanted just like that 100% needs upadesham
Varahi Nigraha + Anugrahashtaka
Durga Saptashati ie Devi Mahatmyam
Lalita Sahasranama
Lalita Trishati
Indrakshi Stotram
Saubhagya Ashtottara
Kartaviryarjuna mantram
Sudharshana Mantram
Shri Maha Sasthur Anugraha Kavacham
Kirathashtakam of Sastha
Subramanya Shatru Samhara Trishati

And there is a propaganda that a person who has got Gayatri Mantra Upadesham can directly chant Lalita Trishati or Sahasranama... I dont know who gave the permission...

Unless there is an explicit reference in the Shastras you cannot take things for granted. A person with Gayaptri mantra Upadesham can very well chant Gayatri Sahasranamam (which is least bothered) and how can he claim mastery over some other area in which he has not given any right?

Donot try to compromise with Mantra Sasthra and try to act smart...
You can very well read all these texts and no one can stop you...

But that may be like reading a story book the net result will be nothing....

Lalita Trishati Parayanam and Srichakra Meru in house

Dear Swami,
Iam doing the parayanam of lalitha trishati and sahasranama.. But Iam not initiated with any mantra... But my friend says that 'devotion that matters' and leave rest to devi and she will take care of rest. So Iam continuing my parayanam... But still when I read some books which says initiation is a must, I get confused

Is this right to do the chanting? Also can we keep Srichakra / Meru in our house?

Balakumar
Guntoor
------------
First let me clarify - that "MY ANSWER TO THIS QUERY IS NOT GOING TO PLEASE MANY OF YOU ". But my Gurunathar has told me... "when you find something wrong - against Sasthras - record your objection and point out the mistake once. Even then if they continue, then its their fate"

So with my Gurus words Iam answering this query.

There is a difference between stotras and maala mantras... Stotras are praises of a particular deity and can be chanted by all... But certain stotras are called Maala Mantras which definitely needs initiation / upadesham for chanting. Any stotras which has Rishi and Nysam had to be taught by a Guru.

You have lots and lots of Stotras on every devata but people always want "the forbidden fruit"

People today are of "Know All" attitude and their Ego does not permit to get upadesham from a particular person as his/her Guru. (A small test if you get annoyed or irritated by reading this line, then please excuse me - you are also in the same zone)

Lalita Trishati is one such powerful Maala Mantra and only people having Srividya Upadesham can chant it. This is not for common folks...

Lalitha Trishati has 300 Names which is divided into 15 groups of 20 naamas each. The Srividya Moola mantram of Lalitha Maha Tripurasundari has 15 letters and for each letter 20 names are attributed and so 15 x 20 =300. So it is very obvious that initiation into Srividya is the basic qualification to Chant Trishati.

And you say your friend says "Devotion That Matters" - when devotion is the factor where does the question of breaking the rules come? A true devotee will never go against the will of his Lord. The same Lord say Lalita in your case have clearly instructed that this has to be secretly maintained and must be given only as upadesham.. So how can you act against Her instruction and gain pray to Her ?

Please read the Poorva Bagam and Uthra Bagam of Lalita Trishati.

When Agasthya approaches Hayagreeva to teach him the important stotra (Lalitha Trishati), Hayagreeva hesitates because that one stotra is extremely secret.

Then Lalitha herself appears before Hayagreeva and asks him to teach Agasthya, the most secret of the stotras called Laltha Trishati. Then Hayagreeva teaches him the Lalitha Trishathi stotra.

When Agasthya himself is not exempted from Guru Upadesha, how can people like us take this as granted?

And today we have Cassettes, CDs, MP3s and even Youtube having Trishati.....

Doing things which are prohibited in the Sasthras will not only stop the results expected but also will yield Nishpalam ie Negative Effects.

Please understand.. IAM NOT THREATENING but iam talking out of consideration towards you...

There are many "So called " Gurus who give permission to their disciples (?? !!) to chant whatever they want. They may say "No upadesham required"... Infact by saying so they become partners in sharing the sin. Who can give permission for acting against Shasthras ?

Today many astrologers or the oracles simply suggest "Chant Trishati for 41 days" ; "Do Srichakra Puja" (They neither have any knowledge on what is Srichakra Puja nor who is Lalitha)

My question is, for an ordinary headache a simple crocin or anacin will do.. you need not go for a brain surgery

Do not attempt to make any mistakes and then blame God.

Please understand Bhakti Maarga is Different from Mantra Marga or Upasana Maarga.... For being an Upasaka one needs bhakti but Being a Bhakta itself will not qualify you to act yourself as an upasaka.

There are numerous other stotras on each and every deities which can be chanted by everyone- you can chant it heart-fully.. Instead of chanting the Stotras without upadesham, you chant all these stotras and pray to her that I only only this, Iam 200% sure that Devi will immediately bless you and grant all your wishes - BECAUSE OF YOUR SINCERITY

After reading all this.. do you want me to answer the the next question of keeping a Meru in the house ?

If there is atleast one  "YES" then I shall answer it

An interesting query on Astrology

Dear Aravindji,

Yesterday I was lucky enough to hear you speak at the Rotary Club yestersay... Your speech was extremely engaging, inspiring and we were amazed to know about the backgruond of our culture.

I have a small doubt.. please answer this

From your talk i could understand that you had a profound knowledge in Astrology and you made a logical approach to the subject as a science.

Could you please tell me some details about the following. Sorry for disturbing you...

It is said one person can get manthira upadeesham, deeksai or gnana only if his horscope (jaadhagam) has a provision for that.. Is this correct?

Ganesh Kumar
Coimbatore

------------------------
Swamy Sharanam

Thanks for your words..

Let me first give you the simple answer -

When a person will enter into Gnana Marga ie the path to wisdom ? Is it because of horoscope ?

Not exactly.... the horoscope infact reflects the purva punyas you have accumulated.. so if you have a provision for Gnana its because of the Purva punya.

But please understand - for upadesham or deeksha the primary qualification is Guru's grace.. And again Guru is not a supernatural person with Orange robe or one who gives you viboothi from air.. He may appear like a very ordinary man; Even the age, position or status is not a criteria. But once you have given a position as your Guru, please understand - He is your GOD.

You need not doubt; or rather should not doubt.

And this will happen again only if your Horoscope is in such a way that you are inclined towards this idea.

Based on the Lagnadhipati and the Lord of the Fifth house you may get Mantra upadesham and which will in turn lead you to the ultimate Goal.

Only One among lakh people get the ripe time, mentality and situation for getting the Gnana from the Guru.
According to the science of astrology, this is a very rare case and may happen to a person during his Kethu Dasa.  When there are malefic planets in the Eighth and the Twelfth houses, this may further lead him to the next level. ie getting fedup with the samsara - family life

Generally it is evident that most of the Maha Purushas or Matra Siddhas have got upadesham and turning points only during the influence of Kethu.

Kethu is the Gnana Kaaraka and he is the only graha who will teach you what is what. Only his influence will exactly lead you to the Gnana Marga.

1) Is ayyappa a dravidian god which is taken into hindu religion after a long time?
bcoz we cannot see him any of the puranas.Only in Skanda purana and brahmanda purana we can see some glimpses about his existance.

2)Why his worship is more popular in  kerala and tamil nadu?

3)who is karuppa saamy? Nothing has been mentioned in any of the puranas about him also.

4)We can see in wikipedia and related serches that ayyanaar worship started from 2nd Century AD itself in tamilnaadu. Is there any chance that a warrior lived in that time and due to the respect every body treated him as god?

5)In sankaracharyar's book "mahastru pooja klapdrumam" we can see balasastha mantram in a local malaylam language and am sure that the particular mantras for balasastha is not sanskrit. This even generates the dought that whether the book written by some body else?

Dear Mr Vinay

Very nice questions.... Though I have answered most of these questions in my Book Maha Sastha Vijayam, let me try to briefly answer the queries....

1) Is ayyappa a dravidian god which is taken into hindu religion after a long time?
bcoz we cannot see him any of the puranas.Only in Skanda purana and brahmanda purana we can see some glimpses about his existance.

This theory is called "ABSURD".... First make the difference between Sastha and Ayyappa... Ayyappa is a local name which will never appear in Puranas (Like Subramanya and Muruga)

So its not right to say Sastha does not appear in Puranas. Do we have access to the Puranas directly ? do we read the original text of the puranas in the original saskrit text?

The total number of slokas in all the puranas goes to 4 lakhs and everyone reads only the precise form of translation of these puranas and never dream about the original text.

Hariharaputra or Sastha is very well available in Brahmanda Purana, Skanda purana (not as a passing reference or glimpses as you reffred but we have exclusive Sastha Patalam itself and 143 places where Sastha is referred). Apart from this Linga Purana, Padma Purana shows the reference of Sastha..

You even have the reference of Sastha in Upanishad...

I can quote a number of examples... but Iam concluding with this...

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2)Why his worship is more popular in  kerala and tamil nadu?

According to my findings, the worship of Sastha must have been a very widespread one - now confined to Southern Zone...

You have traces of worship of Sastha at Bengal- but in a different form...

In Maharashtra its in a different name

In Andra its Gurunatha

Mahidara, the author of Manta Mahodati(written in 14th Century) refers the prayoga karma of a particular Sastha Mantram.... He refers Sastha as the presiding deity of Raivatha Giri (present Day Gujarat)

Brhaspati Smriti refers "Raivathe Maha Sastha" ie Maha Sastha lives on Raivatha Giri....

You even have a place called Mt. Sastha at United States where the Native Indians worship a figure which is very much in resemblance to our Lord Sastha.

May be the southern zone is less penetrated and less attacked and due to the Divine will, the worship of Sastha still prevails here

3)who is karuppa saamy? Nothing has been mentioned in any of the puranas about him also.

Karuppan is the commander in cheif of Sastha's Army of Bhutas....

Ofcourse, so far nothing has been found regarding Karuppan in the puranas.... and many consider him to be Non-Vedhic deity....

But remember we  have exclusive and powerful moola mantra for Karuppan - which is not possible for a non-vedhic deity...

For any deity for that matter, the mantra Sasthra lists five limbs(parts) -

  1. Ashtothra /  Sahasranama

  2. Moola Mantra

  3. Purana

  4. Kavacha

  5. Dhyana / Stotra

Mantra Sasthra recommends, even if one out of this five is available- its assumed that the remaining four are available.. and we need to search for it..

For Karuppan you have three - A wonderful Ashtotram from Rudrayamala Tantra and a very powerful Dhyana and an exclusive moola mantra....

You also have prayoga vidhi using Karuppan, which i cant reveal here....

So Karuppan is a vedhic deity - lack of availability of information on our side is not the mistake of Mantra Sasthra... More of practical experience is to be counted here...

(And there are people who  consider Karuppan as an Amsha or local representation of Maha Kala... who has a definite purana- Iam not entering that subject now....)

4)We can see in wikipedia and related serches that ayyanaar worship started from 2nd Century AD itself in tamilnaadu. Is there any chance that a warrior lived in that time and due to the respect every body treated him as god?

I dont take the version of Historians who give absurd date to each period like placing Adhi Shankra to 8th century AD etc....

Also wikipedia is a place where anyone can write anything.... In one wikipedia page it was written "Sastha has a wife called Pushkala and son called Poorna." (?? !!)  I felt like breaking the computer seeing that....

Now coming to this statement - even before 2nd century you have poets of Sangam period who are named "Sathanar" - a name given after Lord Sastha...

A warrior who is treated as GOD - a system which was followed in Tamilnadu.... It is called Nadukal and the system is totally irrelevant to Ayyanar worship...

If you have visited any Ayyanar temple you could have noticed that Ayyanar/ Sastha is very much according to the Agamic Form...

The Huge figures with Moustage, Big eyes and having very big swords - this is not ayyanar... these are of later date made up of sand-lime or cement..

Whereas Ayyanar is made of stone idol and is of normal size, without any moustage and with two devis - poorna and pushkala - typical agamic style

Nadukal deities have a specific rule which is no way connected to Ayyanar.

5)In sankaracharyar's book "mahastru pooja klapdrumam" we can see balasastha mantram in a local malaylam language and am sure that the particular mantras for balasastha is not sanskrit. This even generates the dought that whether the book written by some body else?

Ive seen the book you are mentioning... If I remember right its published in 1990s and that book does'nt give any source text for claiming it to be written by Shankara...

Just because its printed Adhi Shankara Virachitam it doesnt mean its authored by Shankara....

And by mentioning Bala Sastha I dont think its refering the Bala Swaroopam (Child Form) of Sastha.. instead it gives the dhyanam as "Dhamshtra Karaala Vadhanam...." and gives some absurd moola mantra (???) with typical malayalam words.... It tries to glorify the Kuttichathan who has nothing to do with Sastha....

Regarding the other moola mantras given in the book - some are right but its not free of mistakes (it is complied from the mantras followed and given as upadesham within a particular family at Trivandrum)

You need not doubt.... the book is definitely written by somebody else and of a very latest origin...
