Wearing Ornaments during puja

I believe God is against pride but we see some people always wear Colorful and rich Jarigai Veshti / Sarees and adorn themselves with all kinds of jewels during pooja - as if to show their pomp.

I think God loves only simplicity - so is this necessary ? But I heard your lecture CD - yours words were supporting wearing these ornaments and jewellary wile doing pooja

Which is right ? please clarify

Ramachandran
Manglore
----------------------------------------------------------

Please understand one thing -

That We Obey Rules Blindly Does Not Mean that We should Blindly follow it...

A man was appointed for guard duties in a temple. He used to sit on the gate of the temple and ensure that no one enter in the temple with shoes on. There was a board at the gate, "Please remove your shoes before entering in the temple." He enforced the rules with utmost sincerity.

A man came walking without shoes and tried to enter in the temple. The gatekeeper denied him the entry. "Why?" The man argued," I am not wearing any shoes. How can you deny me entry?"

"Read the rules. It requires that you have to first remove your shoes before entering in the temple. So please go home and wear a shoe, remove it here and then only you can enter in the temple." Came the reply from the gatekeeper.

Most of us may find the gatekeeper a fool because he was enforcing the law without properly understanding it. This is what happens to most people when they try to follow the laws blindly without proper understanding.

Being simple is different and wearing ornaments during puja is totally different. It is not for showing pride... Wearing Shaggy clothes doesnt mean one is without pride. Suppose if you are having an appointment with a VIP of your city- you dress up neatly. This is not to show-off but to make you presentable...

When you think you need to be presentable for an ordinary human being then what about the Creator of the Universe? It is nothing wrong in wearing these dresses and ornaments and decorating yourself - pleasing to the Lord

Moreover Swarnam and Rajatham (Gold and Silver) are depicting Aishwaryam - So you are wearing the ornaments and do puja to the deities--only by whose grace we have come to possess the Aishwaryam(ornaments)

Just imagine - suppose your grand parents are very fond of you and have gifted you a new dress. Definitelty you would wear them and go and meet them. This is not pride or showing off. This is a sense of expressing happiness.

The God has given you the Aishwaryam and you -wearing those ornaments and you are showing your gratitude and happiness by doing puja with hands that wear ornaments.

You might have seen Acharya of Shringeri during Navarati Utsavam - where he used to be in Raja Alankaram wearing crown and Ornaments.

In fact in Shrividya Upasana kramam - it is a must that one must decorate himself fully and only then sit for puja.

Lord Parasurama who is an exponent of Shrividya has written in his book Parasurama Kalpa Sutram:

yaaga mantram kluptaa akalpa: sankalpaa aakalpo vaa

ie A person doing puja should wear those ornaments(kluptaakalpa:) and do the puja in the pujaroom(yaaga mantram).

So it is not pride or showing off - instead its a very nice gesture that  a person is wearing rich clothes and ornaments while duing puja or yagna.

So - the next question may arise.. This can be followed only by rich people?

Parasurama gives the answer "sankalpaa aakalpo vaa" ie for those who cannot afford to wear ornaments, when they do the puja to God, they should mentally imagine wearing these ornaments.

This in turn will get the person - not only the divine blessing but also the actual comforts of the material life.

Sastha and Srividya - paper presented

On 12th December My Lord gave me an Opportunity and I presented a paper at Sri Vidya Pratishhthanam, at Kodungallur for the Conference of Srividya Devotees

Iam presenting an outline of the subject I cannot reveal the full article because Ive discussed the nuances of Sastha Moola Mantram, which I dont want to publish in this open forum.

Speaking for hundreds and hundreds of yugas with His thousand mouths, Lord Shesha cannot complete describing the Glory of Lord Sastha-

That being the case, a person like me will still dare to speak about Sastha and Srividya, relying solely on the grace of Sri Gurukrupa.

Lord Maha Sastha, known popularly as Hariharaputra, is the master in the age of Kali. He is praised as Pratyaksham Tu Kalau, Kalau Shasthru Vinayakau and Kaliyuga Pratyaksham

Paraabhattaarikaa Mahatripurasundari is the goddess of Supreme Beauty and Wisdom who pervades the three functional aspects of manifestation. The principal form of worship of Shakti is Shri Vidya

Son of Lalithambika

Though He is known as Hariharaputra, many will be surprised to know that Sastha is the dear most son of Lalitha and the upasana of Sastha is always in Line with Shrividyopasana...

Lalitha ParaBhattarika is none other than Maha Vishnu and there is no betham in between these two. If one sees the Bhasyam of Namavali such as Govindarupini -- Devi in the form of maha vishnu , Gopthri -- the operator or the maintenance of the universe who is Devi as Maha Vishnu, As in Narayini -- the shakti related to Narayanan or Mahavishnu. Narayini Sthuthi in Durga Sapthasathi calls her Vishnu Maya. Mukunda – one who gives Salvation Mukthi

Now though Sastha is commonly known as Hariharaputhra. It will be interesting to know the relationship between Sastha and Lalithambika. You can see an explicit reference of Sastha in Lalithopakhyana, as the Son of Lalitha Parameshwari.

In Lalithopakhyana, there is a detailed description about the Mohini Avathara. Prakruthi is Lalithamba’s her first incarnation says Lalithopakhyanam. Mohini is Her second incarnation. Yes ! during the amrutha madhanam, when there was a commotion between the Devas and Asuras, Lord Vishnu went to a secluded spot and started meditation of Sri Lalita Devi, who dwells within Him as the aspect of power. Due to this meditation he manifested as a form of Lalita Devi. Taking this incarnation as an embodiment of
eroticism, Vishnu approached the celestials and demons.

thasyam vai janayaamaasa saasthaaram asuraardhanam

So Sastha is considered to be the dear most Son of Lalithambika.

There are many more interesting facts in support of this.. Devi is attributed as "Aapeena Vakshoruhaam". Even for Ganapaty and Subramanya he fed the breast milk only through a cup. But the aspect of Shri Matha was well established with Sastha himself. After the divine incarnation of Sastha, Vishnu returned back to his original from from the Mohini Avathara. Sastha, as a child, began to weep for his parents. This outwardly appears to be a mere childish action, but it was the divine leela to establish the motherhood of Lalithambika. The real mother – Shri Matha fondled with Sastha and suckled him with the milk of wisdom.
Sastha was breast fed by Lalithambika herself.. This incident is very much clearly recorded in books like Kanchi Puranam, Kamakshi Vilasam and Devi Parakramam.

Srividya – Kanchi and Sastha

nagareShu kAnchI – says Bharavi, the author of the great classic – kirAtArjunIya, praising Kanchi as the greatest of cities. It is the only Mokshapuri in Southern India –Kanchi literally means the ornament worn by women around their girdle – called Oddiyana. Kanchi is the foremost Shakti Pitha – called Mahoddyana Pitha (Kamarupa – Assam, Jalandhara – Jalandhar and Purnagiri – Badari being the others). This Peetha is presided over by Sri Charyanandanatha and Sri Parabhattarika themselves as Maha Gurumurtis.

Kanchi is also considered the Nabhi Sthanam or the navel of the Brahmanda. As we know, the navel is the point of origin for all nAdis in the body and is considered to be the storehouse of power. Sri Kamakshi being the source of power for all Devi and Devatas in the world, Kanchi is rightly called the Nabhi Sthana. Sri Lakshmidharacharya in his Samvit Stuti says thus: `O Samvidrupini! At Nabhi Mandala of the Brahmanda, beyond the regions of darkness (i.e. Muladhara and Swadhishthana), you appear as the lightening of parA samvit, hoding pAsha and AMkusha in your hands, seated on Kamakoti Simhasana'.

Sri Lalita Sahasranama describes the greatness of Kamakoti with the names - kAmakoTikA and kAmAkShI. Sri Bhaskararaya comments thus on the name `kAmAkShi' - it is the extraordinary name of the deity who presides over Sri Kamakoti Peetha. Lalitopakhyana of Brahmanda Purana describes the glory of Kanchi and names it as the holy place where the Upadesha of Sri Lalita Sahasranama was given by Lord Hayagriva to sage Agastya.

Every Shrividyopasaka will know that the physical form of Laitha parameswari can be witnessed only at Kanchipuram. It is her Rajadhani... Lalitha parameshwari's headquarters is Kanchipuram - the Shri Nagaram of Bhuloka.. The whole of Kanchi Kshetram is Shrichakraakara(in the form of Shri Chakram). And the Bindu is Kamakshi Sannidhanam.. And an interesting fact the unknown fact is that Right behind Kamakshi is her beloved son with his consorts.. Poorna and Pushkala. We may all know that the position of Guru is our Shri Chakra Puaja Paddathi is right behind the Bindu - the sthanam of Devi. The city of Kanchi itself is in the shape of Srichakra with the Garbha Grha of Amba forming the Maha Bindu. Sri Kamakshi represents pure Parabrahman.

When the whole Kanchi Mandalam is considered as Shri Chakram - Lalitha Parameswari's Sanctum is the Bindu and Sastha's position is right behind the bindu. Ie the position of the Guru.

The upasana of Sastha in the Shrividya cult is maintained with utmost secrecy that too only with a few specific schools of Shri Vidya... In general the practice of Srividya - in the Saubhagya Vidya of Dakshinamnaya one can find Sasthru moorthi. Sastha, (w.r.t to this area) helps the upasakas in begetting children and to overcome the enemies. In the Sadi Vidya - Sastha is one of the Gurus in the Ogatraya

Dharshana Kramam

It is a practice of great shrividyopaskas entering the Kanchi Kshetram must worship all the deities with due Mudras and mantras (iam not explaining the deities and the mudras in this blog) and Finally, one should worship shAstA with the his moola mantra and display khaDga, pAsha, karavAla and other mudrAs and conclude the dharshanam at his Sannidhanam.

Sastha and Sri Chakra

It will be interesting to note that there are a set of songs very much popular in Kerala known as Sastha Paattu. It is a 17th century anthology of Tamil religious songs dedicated to Lord Sastha, written by the poet-saint known as VeeramaniDasar. These songs are known both for its poetical and musical qualities, and for its religious, moral and philosophical content.

Shri.Manidasar belonged to the illustrious Kambankudi family who lived in Melilla near Punalur. He was an ardent Sri Vidyopasaka. He exclaims the glory of the Lord and concludes his songs praising "the son of Lalitha".

Or aarum vimsathiyum or dasamum or eezhum seerai inai seernthu sri purathil vaazhum engal paaraalum lalithai petra balaka

Surprisingly these songs are very much available in Kerala and and these Tamil songs are written in Malayalam script and in Tamilnadu it is known only to a handful of few. The songs also include detailed description of Shri Nagara, Chintamani Griha and the devatas who surround Lalitheswari.

The source of inspiration for all these songs came from a small hamlet in the banks of Thampraparani - known as Karanthapuri. It will be very interesting to know the fact the power house of all the Sastha Kshetrams lie here. The unique worship of Lord Sastha is known as Sastha Preethi actually originated from here. The Kulathooril Ayyan there is worshipped not in the form of a vigraham but in a stone peeta with a beautiful Shri Chakram engraved on it. The Srichakra established is free from scratches to this day and every line is crystal clear even after innumerable years. I have been blessed to see the Srichakra personally and it is amazing to see the clarity of lines in the Srichakra

Even at Sabarimala - the ultimate temple of Sastha among the devotees - the Lord is seated on a Srichakram and not on a Sasthru Yantram. Till few years ago there was a practice of chanting Lalitha Sahasranamam inside the manimandapam which has come to a cease very recently for reasons unknown.

There is also an exact Navavarana Puja kramam for Sastha fitting the Sri Chakram’s 9 avaranas. The Pravesha Krama goes from innermost bindu to the Bhupura. In the Bindu is seated Poorna Pushkala Samedha Maha Sastha, around the Trikonas are Dharma Sastha, Asithanga Bhairava and Vyagrapadha and similarly there are 9 avarana devatas exactly like Lalitambika

Srividya Kshetram

Many temples which is associated with the Srividya cult definitely has Sastha with them. You may be the mooladhara kshetram Thiruvarur is "Srividya Temple" in other words. Here the temple dharshan is done exactly like the Srividya deeksha kramam. It starts with 28 lettered Maha Ganapathy sannidhi and all the Srividya Devatas including Matruka aksharas are housed in each shrines. Lord Vanmeeka natha is Sadhashiva here and Lord Thyagaraja is "Shiva - Shaktyaikya Swarupini". The alankaram here shows only the face of Lord Shiva and Shakti and the Paada Darshanam is shown only during the Pankuni Uthram day. The uniqueness of this paada Darshanam is  - the right leg of shiva and the left leg of devi alone is shown. And the more interesting fact is if one takes a pradakshinam and looks at the back side of the vigraham - its a single pinnal jadai - hair dressing of a woman.

And then comes Kamalambika sannidhi. And at the very entrace of Kamalambika welcomes Sastha. One has to worship Sastha and only then proceed to devi Sannidhi. Kamalambika is the ultimate Kamakala Swarupini. Ucchishta ganapati the mula virat swarupa of Kamakala is also seen in front of devi.

Muthuswami Deekshitar a great Srividyopasaka sees no difference between Sastha and Lalithambika - in his Kruthi Hariharaputram, says "pushpa SarEkshu kArmuka dharaM" - Sastha is visualised as three eyed, clad in red, Having Pushpa Saram, Ikshu Kodhandam and having the ratna chashakam.

Upasana Kramam

Interestingly the Sahasranama of Sastha has many unique namas which is exclusive only to Srividya kramam. Example,
Pancha Brahma Parayanaya, Kubjika Mantra Vigrahaya, Hreemkaraya, Hreem Manase, Hreemkara Rasa pesalaya, Humkara Kruthi Su Prabhave, Bindu Priyaya Nama, Baindavasanaya

And apart from this there is an exclusive puja Paddathi for Sastha which has everything similar to that of Lalitha kramam. My Paramaguru who was an exponent in Srividya (whose kuladevata was Shasta) worshipped the Lord 100% with the Srividyopasana paddathi.

In our Sasthru Guru parampara, I was able to trace out and find out many more hidden treasures in the near past.  Right from Pratha Smaranam, Snana Vidhi, Thantrika Sandhya, Pathraasadhanam, Chathushshashti Upacharam, Navavarana Puja and even Vishesha Argyam. – everything we have exclusively for Sastha

And even the Mantra upadesha kramam is more or less Similar to Shrividya Kramam.

In Shri Vidya after Ganapathy, its Bala Mantra upadesham. Then comes Matangi and Varahi who are the Mantri and Senapathi of Lalithamba. Correspondingly Bhuvaneshwari and Chandika Mantropadesham is given and then leading to Panchadashi and Paduka Deeksha.

Interestingly the upadesha kramam we follow for Sasthru Upasana is equated to the same order.

It starts similarly with Ganapaty; Like Bala who is the daughter of Lalithambika its Satyaka Mantram, who is son of Lord Sastha. Then Bhoothesha and Krushnabha’s mantrams who are the Mantri and Senapathi of Sastha. Hariharaputra Mantram and Kiratha Sastha Mantram is given which both are stand alone mantras clubbed into Sasthru Upasana  - similar to Bhuvaneshwari and Chandika included in Lalithopasana. Then comes Ashtakshari Sasthru Maha Mantram similar to Panchadasi and ends with Guru Paduka Deeksha.

Sasthru Moola Mantram
(please excusue me if this is a bit confusing... but I can not reveal the actual moola mantram here)

And finaly coming to Sasthru Moola mantram its XXX - XX - XXX

The first alphabet of Sasthru beejam is fourth Gha, Gha is an alphabet which is nothing but Shudda Vidya

Shudda Vidya is the 32nd Thathwam. So anything related to this signified by the number 32.

Shuddha vidyangurakara dwija pangthi dwayojjala - says Lalitha Sahasram
Lalithopakhyanam has 32 Chapters.
The ucchishta Ganapati upasana which is nothing but Srividya is same 32 lettered with the same Gha beejam

Shudda Vidya ie 32 is again signified in Maha PrAsada Avarana Puja.

Avarana krama for Maha prAsada Vidya is different from regular Srichakra Navavarana and is described in the Krama Tantras. Also, one should understand that the Maha Prasada Vidya does not refer to prAsAda bIjA – parAprAsAda or prAsAda parA, but instead to the 32-lettered vidyA – which is described as avidyAcChedinI or parA chintAmaNi in the Tantras. The AvaraNa procedure for mahA prAsAda, which is given along with mahA pAdukA during pUrNAbhiSheka in dakShiNAchAra sampradayas.

Most of the Srividya Upasakas perform the Maha Prasada pUjA in Srichakra itself, visualizing the Avaranas as described in Kubjika Tantra. The Maha Prasada Aavarana puja has Sastha in the Ninth Avarana.

Interestingly this Shudda Vidya 32 is signified in all the different Sastha Mantras.

ie Harihara Putra Mantram (the one which is suppose to give Putra Labha and Shatrnu Nashanam) is 32 lettered.

The Abheeshta Varadha Sastha Mantram given by Raivatha Rishi (in the book Mantra Mahodathi by Mahidara) is 32 lettered

Another popular Mantram of Sastha starting with "Sarvagnja"  is also 32 lettered.

And Coming Back to our Ashtakshara Maha Vidya of Sasth,

GHA is Shudda Vidya

When the Para Shivam which is without Chalanam developes a desire it is called Sadha Shivam. This Sadha Shivam's Shakthi is shudda vidya. Shuddha vidyA - the condition which is operating upon sadAshivam, causing it to identify itself with the phenomenal world.

Next part of the beejam – is Agni thathwam. In pancha bootha thathwam this signifies Pradhama Dravyam ie Vishesha Argyam. In other words all the things related to puja – the dravyams for Bahya Puja.

The next part indicates left ear ie the Nivruthi Margam. Ie the puja done within – Athma Vicharam or Anthar Muka Samaradhya.

A Lotus exists in water but the water doesnot stick to the Lotus leaf. But without water it cannot exist. Here in this state this bedha buddhi is Maya. The ultimate one is seen as two entities.

So in a Upasana  - both the Margas are complementing with each other. Once cannot exist without the other. Even Lalitha Sahasranama says Bahir Mukha Sudurlapa (it desnt says its tmpossible - it says its a little difficult)

When u think of any divine form inside – you contemplate on him and the same is installed on a Vigraham or a Picture outside and its worshipped. So what is done inside is done outside. The Same is Shudda Vidya.

So when the Supreme One becomes Two because of bedha buddhi – it is approached both through Chidda Shuddi and Bhahya Puja. This is XXX - Sastha's beejam

Na ma: - understand Iam not this Jeevan

XXX - XXX - Iam the Supreme Secret –ie knowing the Self - Atman
This is XXX XX XXX

The Supreme One is divided into two because of bedha buddhi. So by internal and external puja one has to understand that he is not the jeevan but the Supreme being.

This is the goal of Srividyopasana and the Same is Sasthru Vidya

Sastha Upasana is nothing but Srividya.

Before coming to this programme yesterday I had an opportunity to goto Kanchipuram to have the Darshan of Shri Lalitheswari. To my total surprise, the new Pancha Brahmasana made for her, kept for Lord Sastha.

Lord Maha Sastha was seated on Pancha Brahmasana surrounded by the 15 Nitya Devis as if showing me my mother Lalitha and her Laalitha Sudha – Sastha both are one and the same.

Lalita Trishati Parayanam and Srichakra Meru in house

Dear Swami,
Iam doing the parayanam of lalitha trishati and sahasranama.. But Iam not initiated with any mantra... But my friend says that 'devotion that matters' and leave rest to devi and she will take care of rest. So Iam continuing my parayanam... But still when I read some books which says initiation is a must, I get confused

Is this right to do the chanting? Also can we keep Srichakra / Meru in our house?

Balakumar
Guntoor
------------
First let me clarify - that "MY ANSWER TO THIS QUERY IS NOT GOING TO PLEASE MANY OF YOU ". But my Gurunathar has told me... "when you find something wrong - against Sasthras - record your objection and point out the mistake once. Even then if they continue, then its their fate"

So with my Gurus words Iam answering this query.

There is a difference between stotras and maala mantras... Stotras are praises of a particular deity and can be chanted by all... But certain stotras are called Maala Mantras which definitely needs initiation / upadesham for chanting. Any stotras which has Rishi and Nysam had to be taught by a Guru.

You have lots and lots of Stotras on every devata but people always want "the forbidden fruit"

People today are of "Know All" attitude and their Ego does not permit to get upadesham from a particular person as his/her Guru. (A small test if you get annoyed or irritated by reading this line, then please excuse me - you are also in the same zone)

Lalita Trishati is one such powerful Maala Mantra and only people having Srividya Upadesham can chant it. This is not for common folks...

Lalitha Trishati has 300 Names which is divided into 15 groups of 20 naamas each. The Srividya Moola mantram of Lalitha Maha Tripurasundari has 15 letters and for each letter 20 names are attributed and so 15 x 20 =300. So it is very obvious that initiation into Srividya is the basic qualification to Chant Trishati.

And you say your friend says "Devotion That Matters" - when devotion is the factor where does the question of breaking the rules come? A true devotee will never go against the will of his Lord. The same Lord say Lalita in your case have clearly instructed that this has to be secretly maintained and must be given only as upadesham.. So how can you act against Her instruction and gain pray to Her ?

Please read the Poorva Bagam and Uthra Bagam of Lalita Trishati.

When Agasthya approaches Hayagreeva to teach him the important stotra (Lalitha Trishati), Hayagreeva hesitates because that one stotra is extremely secret.

Then Lalitha herself appears before Hayagreeva and asks him to teach Agasthya, the most secret of the stotras called Laltha Trishati. Then Hayagreeva teaches him the Lalitha Trishathi stotra.

When Agasthya himself is not exempted from Guru Upadesha, how can people like us take this as granted?

And today we have Cassettes, CDs, MP3s and even Youtube having Trishati.....

Doing things which are prohibited in the Sasthras will not only stop the results expected but also will yield Nishpalam ie Negative Effects.

Please understand.. IAM NOT THREATENING but iam talking out of consideration towards you...

There are many "So called " Gurus who give permission to their disciples (?? !!) to chant whatever they want. They may say "No upadesham required"... Infact by saying so they become partners in sharing the sin. Who can give permission for acting against Shasthras ?

Today many astrologers or the oracles simply suggest "Chant Trishati for 41 days" ; "Do Srichakra Puja" (They neither have any knowledge on what is Srichakra Puja nor who is Lalitha)

My question is, for an ordinary headache a simple crocin or anacin will do.. you need not go for a brain surgery

Do not attempt to make any mistakes and then blame God.

Please understand Bhakti Maarga is Different from Mantra Marga or Upasana Maarga.... For being an Upasaka one needs bhakti but Being a Bhakta itself will not qualify you to act yourself as an upasaka.

There are numerous other stotras on each and every deities which can be chanted by everyone- you can chant it heart-fully.. Instead of chanting the Stotras without upadesham, you chant all these stotras and pray to her that I only only this, Iam 200% sure that Devi will immediately bless you and grant all your wishes - BECAUSE OF YOUR SINCERITY

After reading all this.. do you want me to answer the the next question of keeping a Meru in the house ?

If there is atleast one  "YES" then I shall answer it

Guru and Guru Tattva

Who is a Guru? What is his role? Is he necessary for a human being?

The path to our goal is rugged, and is infested with hungry wolves and tigers and with yawning pits - and the necessity for a Guide is inevitable. Guru is the only guide who can make your travel safe and help you reach your destination.

Guru is God. Guru is everything. He is brother, father, well-wisher, relative and true friend. A Guru is the vital part in one’s life…

And the main problem with people is they even fail to understand the necessity and the importance of a Guru. A Guru’s prime job is to remove the ignorance of his sishya. But most of us seek a Guru – who, according to us is our “Problem solver”. Delay in marriage, Non-employment, family disputes etc etc we have a very long list, whenever we meet a Sage or Guru. Only a genuine seeker will know what it is to get attracted to an enlightened master.

My Gurunatha,  Sri Seshadri Swamigal was beyond the description of a saint, a reality that cannot be clutched and clasped by the mind leading one to realization. Sri Seshadri Swamigal’s interaction with the world was very strange. Seshadri Swamigal's behavior was quite eccentric and unpredictable. He acted like a mad man at times to fend off worldly people, but to earnest seekers he was extremely gentle and considerate Often when people saw him in the streets they would prostrate before him and he would get near to enable them to touch his feet. But, he would never allow selfish or worldly people to touch his feet. He would run away and if they forced themselves on him, he would abuse them or even pelt them with stones. Seeing this, many people did not go near him. But when the person is a real pathra – seeking for the ultimate truth, he would himself call them and give what they want.

For a layman, a Guru is a form that bestows all the grace for a fruitful material and spiritual life. And the masters – out of Sheer kindness encourage us with all our worldly limitations and give us the helping hand. The Guru helps the sishyas in all aspects by solving their problems. They wait for a sathsishya to come – whom they can ignite. With this mentality when we get attracted to the Guru, sure we will recognize a new center unveiling within us.

And who is a Guru? One must clearly understand that a Guru is not a person who jumps from the sky with four hands.  Anything that diverts the mind from the ultimate truth -is maya and the power which makes the mind ‘turn back’ and seeks to the source is Guru.

Though he may appear to be a normal person.. He may appear to behave like everyone else. But, Guru is something beyond comprehension and only when you have a direct experience of the Guru's grace, then you realize the supremacy of Guru.

`One should not look upon his master as a mere human being, or the mantra that he gives as merely words. A person who does this, or commits the mistake of looking upon an idol (devatA vigraha) as a mere stone, will certainly go to hell'.

A person who has ultimate faith in his Guru and His words – for him no sadhana is needed. The Moksha is very well assured for him. Ultimate trust in Guru - fully and wholeheartedly is the only sadhana.

You can never judge a Guru – who is compassion personified. Their acts may be dramatic – but they are deeply impressive and has a very great significance. Even the emotions which they show – is another vehicles to carry the grace. The ordinary words which come from them are a teaching thereby imparting guidance in a more profound way.

When Vallimalai Swamigal came to Thiruvannamalai in search of a spiritual path, he met Sri Seshadri Swamigal who said nothing but the following words
“Thiruppugazh dhan Mahamantram” - Thiruppugazh is the Maha Mantra.
This words from Gurunathar- transformed the life of the disciple. Sri Sachidhananda Swamigal dedicated his entire life to highlight the glory of Thiruppugazh.

From the Ever compassionate Guru, even scolding had the effect of erasing self image and infusing grace.

Seshadri Swamigal had the habit of picking up pieces of broken mud pots and throwing them at people sometimes. One day, one shepherd boy approached him. Seshadri Swami, for no apparent reason, began to beat him up with those pot pieces! Even blood began to ooze out of the wounds. A crowd collected around. Some of them were upset and some disconcerted. Two months later, one foreign couple came to Tiruvannamalai, saw the boy and adopted him. They taught him their family trade. He became a millionaire later! Even the anger of the Guru is a great blessing, if only we know how to receive.

Srividyopasana, the highest form of Upasana and highly secretive in nature. A Srividyopasaka’s daily routine starts - as soon as he gets up from his bed in the morning, the first thing to do is to meditate on the sacred feet of his Guru. This he must do even before he thinks of his Ishta Devata

The Guru Tatwa is an embodiment of complete Karunyam – compassion. The Divine force has Five distinct functions (pancakrityam)– and the guru tatwa belongs to the profoundest of the five divine functions ie. Srishti (creation), Stithi (sustenance), Samhara (destruction or devolution), Tirodhana (veiling) and Anugraha (grace).
Guru is Anugraha mayam. What does anugraha mean? It is the power which takes a mature soul to the higher plane – by making him come in contact with the master and in turn lead to Gnana (self knowledge). Thus when the divine grace itself assumes a human form – and this power of grace manifests through the personality of the teacher – Guru.

Faith is the state of mind towards the all supreme. It is the surrender that gets the grace of the Guru. Once this state is attained, then the worldly issues will not bother the disciple. Now, it’s the responsibility of the Guru to take care of his Sishya – the helpless child.

But please remember – to a devotee who has made an ultimate surrender – the very need for a prayer itself comes to an end. The Guru takes care of all problems, burdens and even day to day activities. This continues not only for a particular period of time but till he attains Moksha.

It is this power of grace that emanates from the Guru that fascinates the seeker. When the sishya is ready, the Guru comes automatically to “take care” of his child and thereby show him the right path.

A Chintamani is a stone which can only convert the metal into gold. But guru does the greatest alchemy. He transfigures his disciple into his own likeness through the upadesham. The ultimate grace of guru gives a deathly blow to the disciple's ignorance and makes him understand the ultimate; thus now the sishya becomes a Guru for another seeker.
vinA dIkShAM na mokShaH syAduktaM shivashAsane |
sA cha na syAdvinAchAryaM ityAchAryaparamparA ||

`Without initiation, there can be no release from the phenomenal bondage; and there can be no initiation without a master. Hence the succession of masters
He who have tasted the bliss, hand it down to the next in line. The Guru can transform the disciple by a look, a touch, a thought or a word or willing. When this is passed down in this way, those whose desire for the ultimate - can do so by the grace of the lineage or ‘parampara’.
Seshadri Swamigal initiated Shri Vallimalai Swamigal. Sri Vallimalai Swamigal – even after his Maha Samadhi, appeared to Sethuraman who had run away from his home and safely took him back home. He placed a composition called 'Hara HarO Haraa Kummi' in Sethuraman's bag. He appeared in the boy's dream and told them to sing the kummi and dance.  From then onwards Sethuraman became an arutkavi Sadhuram Swamigal with the ability to sing hundreds of songs and poems.

Sri Chandrasekarendra Saraswathi, Maha Periyaval of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam said once "will I become like Seshadri Swamigal". Such was  the greatness of our Gurunathar Sri Seshadri Swamigal.

A Guru is a manifestation of Karunyam. The Guru is like a Mother, full of Love and Compassion. He is none other than Parashakti - who is avyaja karuna moorthi who showers the grace for no reason.

This once unlettered boy, whom he took under his benevolent care, with the " Hiranya Bahu " - the Golden Hand which turned him what he is today, dedicates these few words with veneration and humility to the Lotus feet of Shri Seshadri Swamigal
sharIraM surUpaM sadA roga-muktam
yashashcAru citraM dhanaM meru tulyam
guror aGghri-padme manashcen na lagnam

tataH kiM tataH kiM tataH kiM tataH kiM

"One's body may be beautiful and always healthy, one's fame may be wonderful and bright, and one's wealth may be like a mount of gold. But if the mind is not fixed on the lotus-feet of the Guru, then What is the use? What is the use? What is the use? What is the use?

Shyamala

Raja Shyamala or Raja Matangi is the Minister - Mantrini of Goddess lalitha Parameshwari. She was created by Lalitha from HER sugar cane bow during HER battle with Bandasura. She rules the Empire(the Cosmos) on behalf of “Para Bhattarika” Herself as indicated in Lalitha Sahasranam as
“Mantrini Nyasta raajya dhoo” and also bears the sovereign Mudra modiram (the ring of the Queen).

Matangi represents the mind and its activities. 'Vishanga', who represents the crooked mind was killed by HER.

She has eight arms holding: paddy-past karmas, lotus-mind in worldly activity, paasha -love, ankusa-anger, japa mala and books - knowledge, and the veena -yoga. Her right foot is down indicating must do sadhana in the world by looking at her manifestation.

The devotees of Matangi is known to be blessed with Her grace of proficiency in poetry, Music, Dancing and other fine arts—thus they become highly learned in their chosen field.

The Lalithopakhyana gives a wonderful collection of names of Matangi.

Connection of Sastha with Srividya Upasana

sidharth kris

could u plz tell me the details of connection of sastha with srividya upasana....

---------------------------

Connection of Sastha with Srividya Upasana

You will find a brief explanation regarding this in my book "Shri Maha Sastha Vijayam"... and I shall try to throw some more light in the area:

Sastha is the dear most son of Lalitha and the upasana of Sastha is always in Line with Shrividyopasana...
Right behind Kamakshi is her beloved son with his consorts.. Poorna and Pushkala...

I've heard from scholars like Harshanandanatha that a shrividyopaska entering the Kanchi Kshetram must worship all the deities with due Mudras and mantras and finally end the journey with Lord Sastha by worshipping him with Kalyana Shastru mantra and display the Khadga, pasham karavala and other mudras.
In general the practice of Srividya - in the Saubhagya Vidya of Dakshinamnaya one can find Sasthru moorthi. Here he is worshiped in the forms Darma Sastha and Kirata Sastha.

Sastha, (w.r.t to this area) helps the upasakas in begetting children and to overcome the enemies.

You can see an explicit reference of Sastha in Lalithopakhyana, as the Son of Lalitha Parameshwari. Shri.Manidasar of the illustrious Kambankudi family (also a devi upasaka) exclaims the glory of the Lord and concludes his songs praising "the son of Lalitha"

Though you find these details and explicit references...

The upasana of Sastha in the Shrividya cult is maintained with utmost secrecy that too only with a few specific schools of Shri Vidya...
In the Sadi Vidya - Sastha is one of the Gurus in the Ogatraya

For example if you observe carefully you can find Sastha in the 9th avarana of Maha Prasada vidya (Mahaprasada Avarana has to be worshipped after Urdhwamnaya Puja -only by the Poornabhishiktas and that too - with Sri Guru's guidance)
My Paramaguru who was an exponent in Srividya (whose kuladevata was Shasta) worshipped the Lord 100% with the Srividyopasana paddathi.

I dont know how many of us are aware of the fact the power house of all the Sastha Kshetrams lie at Karanthapuri(today - Kallidaikuichi) - in the banks of river Tamrabarani. The Kulathooril Ayyan there is worshipped in a stone peeta with Shri Chakram engraved on it...
(Due to the merits accumulated for thousands of my previous births - the Lord gave me an opportunity to touch the Srichakram here and offer my worship with my own hands)

And even at Sabarimalai - the Lord is seated on Srichakram and not on a Sasthru Yantram.
There is an exclusive Srichakra puja paddathi for Sastha(which is unfortunately not available with anyone and Iam searching for it)

And let me conclude this with a "Deva Rahasya" which was shared to me by a great Srividyopaska:

Devi has four powerful deities guarding her kingdom. The two are the powerful deities Ashtamukha Gandabherunda Nrisimha and Sashaktika Maha Vamana. The third is Kalasamkarshini Kali and fourth is our Master - Lord Shasta accompanied by Purna and Pushkala.

A special thanks to you - because of your question, I had a great opportunity to contemplate on these wonderful informations and on my mother Lalitha and her Laalitha Sudha.

Dasavatharam & Dasamahavidya

Is there any connection between Dasamahavidya of Devi and Dasavatharams of Vishnu?

Chandramouli Iyer, Pune
----------------------

Though this topic is little bit off the track... I myself wanted to answer this becoz it falls more under my domain....

Amba is not different from Vishnu... She is called Govinda Rupiri in Lalitha Sahasranama. And the ten incarnations of Vishnu are Her expansions...
You wont find any puranic lore for the relation between these Vidyas and Avatharas but the logic of putting the Dasamahavidya with the Dasavataram is related thru perception and thru the Tanric interpretation.
If watched carefully one can find the theory of evolution in the Dasaavathara.
The same way the Dasamahavidyas represent the evolution of the Soul.

The First Avatara in an 100% aquatic fish and the Last is the Man of Purnathvam(complete) - Kalki.
- from a fish to a complete man..

Similarly as Nirguna Swaroopi, she is Kali of Darness;
As Saguna roopi she is Sundari of ultimate Gnana(wisdom)

A sloka from Lalita Sahasranama says ``karanguli nakhotpanna Narayana dasa kritih" that from the nails of the ten fingers of the Devi emerged the ten manifestations of Narayana as Dasavataram.

The ten manifestations of devi as Kali, Tara, Tripurasundari, Bhairavi, Bhagalamuki, CHinnamasta, Doomavati, Kamala, Bhuvaneswari and Matangi embody a whole range of attitudes gracious and awesome, benign and destructive. The same force called "Shakti" is the motivational force for the ten incarnations of Vishnu.
She is Vishnu and He is Devi; There is no difference between them.

These comparisons only mean that Amba's being non-different from
Narayana and need not be taken literally.

If amba wills, I shall write about all these 10 vidyas in detail.
